AUSTRALIA is experiencing a wave of house decor revival.
The first Victorian-era houses were built in the 1850s, and are still popular in parts of Sydney and Melbourne.
The Victorian revival is seen as an opportunity for home owners to try out modernist styles and new design techniques, with the aim of creating more authentic and unique living spaces.
But the revival has also seen a lot of controversy.
In 2015, a man was charged with damaging and vandalising two Victorian houses, and in 2018 a woman was charged after being found with a painting that depicted a severed head.
Since then, several Victorian-style homes have been destroyed in a number of cities, including Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.
Newcastle has one of the most extensive Victorian-inspired houses in the world, with a total of 27 houses.
Its Victorian revival has led to a resurgence in the use of decorative lanterns in the city, as well as the use in local communities of traditional decor and lighting.AAP/ABC
